“An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” – Benjamin Franklin
What if you had to plan your financial future, land your dream job, navigate sudden setbacks, and build wealth all before turning 18? That’s exactly what our High School and Middle School Eagles are tackling this session in our Personal Finance Quest: The Game of Life.
The quest begins with a deep dive into what money means to each Hero. Through this self-reflection they will start to understand how to manage money and how money plays within their lives. Then, the Eagles will pitch their careers to fellow Eagles. Once their career is approved, they will choose a path, backed with investments, expenses, family, and TAXES!!! Of course, life throws curveballs. Heroes face surprise events like medical bills, home repairs, and MORE TAXES!!! Planning (or failing to plan) for these realities highlights just how consequential financial foresight can be.
The High School is also stepping into the world of investing. Using the STAX simulation platform, our Heroes learn to navigate risk, valuation, black swans, and Nassim Taleb's barbell strategy. They're diving into everything from gold to growth stocks, hedge funds to real estate, and even exploring speculative strategies like options and arbitrage. Sahlman's Four Rules guide them in assessing real investment decisions, bridging theory with real-world wisdom.
Writer’s Workshop: Rhetorical Devices
Alongside their financial quest, our Middle and High School Eagles are sharpening their pens in a Rhetorical Devices Writer’s Workshop. From punchy similes to playful alliteration, students are mastering the art of language. They’re learning how a single metaphor can evoke emotion, how foreshadowing adds depth, and how irony can twist a tale in just the right way. It’s about telling a story that resonates. These tools will not only serve them in essays and storytelling, but also in job interviews, pitches, and persuasive conversations throughout life.
Exhibition Preview
At the end of the session, our Middle and High Schoolers will showcase their personal and financial journeys during our exhibition. Families will get a front-row seat to the ambitions, plans, and investments that Heroes have thoughtfully crafted. This isn’t just about numbers on a spreadsheet, it’s about seeing their thoughts behind each plan, the passions fueling career choices, and the preparation for life's uncertainties.
You will also get a chance to see all the wonderful stories that the Eagles have put together by diving deep into each of the Rhetorical Devices they have been working through.
